Chronic urinary tract infections are miserable, especially when you’ve been on course after course of antibiotics and they’re not helping. Recurrent UTIs can be a real concern for women, especially at a reproductive age in regards to fertility, bladder and kidneys infections. What to do…
In Chinese medicine, we diagnose UTIs from two different causes…hot or cold. ‘Hot’ UTIs are usually acute, painful and easily helped with antibiotics. Cold UTIs however, are more long term, can even possibly worsen with antibiotics and are more characterised by frequent urination, feeling of needing to urinate and then get to the bathroom and can’t go, symptoms worsen in cold weather or air conditioning, low back pain, tiredness and feelings of cold. These symptoms can often occur after urogenital surgery or after childbirth in a hospital due to being exposed to a cold environment. Unfortunately because antibiotics also cool the body (that’s how they help with the acute, hot type of UTIs), they can contribute to the condition.
The great news is, acupuncture and moxibustion can help. We’ve been getting great results in clinic with acupuncture to the lower abdomen and low back with the addition of moxibustion and the heat lamp. A course of treatment can vary from 3 to 8 weeks depending on the length of time you have experienced the symptoms and the length of time you have been on antibiotics.
